Filipinos bought 11M worth of items from Shopee in the early minutes of 11.11

Filipinos went on an online shopping spree last November 11. Shopee sold a whopping 11 million items in the Philippines in the first 5 minutes of its 11.11 Big Christmas sale, the e-marketplace reported.
Visits to the online platform jumped 5.5 times in the first 2 hours compared with the daily average, the statement added, as Filipinos likely waited for the 11.11 sale to take advantage of huge discounts before making their purchases.
Products that saw the highest local sales included health and personal care such as face masks and skincare products; mobile accessories; home and living goods, and women’s apparel. The statement added that one Filipino electronics seller earned almost P70 million in the first 2 hours of the shopping fest.
Like all markets around the world, online sales in the Philippines have vastly increased during the COVID-19 quarantines as Filipinos flocked to e-commerce platforms rather than risk being infected in the malls and other physical marketplaces. One report said 52 percent of Filipinos made their first online purchase through apps and websites since the quarantines started, while 43 percent used social media channels.
