The root of this growth is a result of a shift in consumer behavior towards online purchasing, generating considerable revenue for these online Platforms. Some of which were major players like Amazon, Lazada, Shopee, etc.
It was reported that these platforms not only experienced an increase in sales, but an addition of new consumers and an increased number of visitors. With this, they received investments which further increased their value in the market to billions. Countries experiencing this include, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and The Philippines.
The internet economy overall increased significantly, however, it could not be said for other economies. This includes the online travel gross merchandise economy, they experience a decline in value in some countries as over 50%. Though it is projected that the economy will grow back, it will take until 2025.
